In September 1990 I was brought to Japan for the launch of the first Virgin Megastore in Marui department store Shinjuku, Tokyo. I came on a three month contract but was still DJ’ing for Virgin Megastores Japan when the last store was rebranded Tsutaya in December 2008. I started out as Virgin Megastore DJ in Sydney in 1988, so I was a Virgin for 20 years (yeah OK I had to make one virgin joke).
I had some brilliant experiences in those 20 years, including creating the UK Night at Milk Club in Ebisu in the Brit Pop boom of the early 90’s, producing the Virgin Atlantic Airways in-flight J-pop channel, starting Virgin Mega Station cable/satellite radio network in 1997, setting up Virgin club tents and chillout zones at Fuji Rock Festivals, and interviewing hundreds of inspiring artists. I would like to say a huge thank you to DJ Sayoko Kamei, producer Dennis Oliver and my former boss Mike Inman who made it all possible.
